In an interview, Shadows says that he chose "M. Shadows" as his stage name because he thought of himself as "the darker character in the group,". The M is in place of his first name, Matthew, which he did not want to be in his stage name because of the way it sounded. He also added that he and the band took stage names because many other successful musicians that they were influenced by had them e. Shadows' vocal style has evolved significantly over the years. On the band's first full-length record, Sounding the Seventh Trumpet, he featured harsh, metalcore-style growls with limited instances of clean vocals.
The release of Waking the Fallen in demonstrated his progression towards melodic vocal lines, but still retained a strong screaming influence. However, the most significant change came with the release of the band's major label debut, City of Evil, in , which featured minimal background screaming, stronger vocal melodies, and increased emphasis on harmonies and melodic hooks. This change resulted in newly established vocal contributions from each band member during live performances, and remained prevalent on every record the band has released since , with the exception of songs like "God Hates Us" on Nightmare, and single "Not Ready To Die", which both returned to the signature screaming style of earlier releases heard from Rumors were spread that Shadows had lost his ability to scream due to throat surgery needed after Warped Tour However, this was proven false.
The record we want to make…is going to be half-screaming and half-singing. I noticed many people hated the fact that Shadows stop screaming, while others didn't really care.
If you look on the comments on a lot of avenged sevenfold songs especially from the Waking the fallen album many people comment "this is A7X's true sound" or " remember when M. Shadows used to scream". While I gravitate towards some opinions, I respect all of them. Many people started to theorize that when he had his pre-City of Evil surgery he lost his ability to scream.
In reality he just lost 5 notes from his vocal range. The surgery did make his screams slightly different, but you can barely hear the difference. The truth to why Matt Shadows stopped screaming is quite simple.
He just didn't want to. He reaveled in an interview that the band just screamed over anything that they didn't know what to do with. He eventually stopped because he wanted to put more effort into avenged sevenfold's music. He also revealed that he wants to preserve his voice and screaming was ruining it slowly. The best evidence that we have that M. His screams were amazing and they proved many people wrong.
Avenged sevenfold's bassist aka Johnny Christ has now took over the responsibility of aiding M. Shadows in live screaming. However, this is not true. Despite having admitted minor throat surgery this was not a cause for the change and in an interview on All Excess, manager Larry Jacobson states that Shadows had decided two years before the making of City of Evil that it would be an all singing album.
He had made it clear to their producer, Andrew Murdock, that the album they were working on at the time Waking the Fallen album would be half singing and half screaming, and that the next would be all singing. In the past Shadows would sing on all parts of the songs during live performances, supporting the theory that he was no longer able to scream or growl.
