Unfortunately, that image of Kharma was not the full extent of her character. Not only did this development anger us, but it should have intrigued us and caused us to question, "What's next?
We saw a monster in Kharma and delighted in that image. How nifty is that? For once, especially in light of the last few pay per views, the WWE did something unpredictable. We cannot get mad at the WWE because we refused to ignore the signs all along.
For starters, Kharma destroyed both faces and heels. So which side of the fence is she really on? Is she someone to cheer or someone to boo? Add to that the moment when she chased Michael Cole out of the ring right after decimating Layla.
With all this character development swirling inside the ring, how callous was it for us to place Kharma into a neat and quaint little box by expecting her to just destroy all of the Divas by herself? As I said above, I've been noticing tiny twinges of feelings out there that her attacks on Divas are getting old quickly.
Changing her direction, even in a slight way, could be a great thing. Look where other characters have gone. R-Truth, the perpetually dancing and rapping good guy, has turned into the meanest, most cynical son-of-a-gun in the company. Layla El stood up for herself against Michelle McCool's verbal abuse. Drama, in case some of you haven't noticed, is freaking rampant! I'm loving WWE the past few weeks! Furthermore, let's play Devil's Advocate for a minute.
Let's say Kharma came out of that confrontation the victor. Let's say she invincibly fended off eight Divas all by herself! Where does that put any one of them in competition with her? If she can stand there while eight Divas pound on her to absolutely no avail, wouldn't that make Kharma look a bit too strong?
Before any of you see this as a bad thing, please hold onto your cynicism and just stow it. I want to see how this plays out. There's no way WWE is going to let Kharma run rampant on Divas, teasing us with quality battles, just so they can pull the plug on her violence altogether and turn her into a cuddly teddy bear.
I'm not ashamed in the slightest to admit that I'd love to meet Kia Stevens, get her autograph and ask her for a huge bear hug and a picture. I do not, under any circumstances, think she's going to be turned soft overall, and at least, not for very long.
The debut of Kharma's character is one of the best put together and hyped debuts in WWE in a while. I'd like to believe that WWE, despite running many of their top characters into the ground—see Cena, Orton, Mysterio—and even letting their middle ground characters stagnate and look irrelevant—a la Swagger, Sheamus, McIntyre—, but Kharma?
I'm sorry, but I'm normally optimistic and I have eons of faith this will go well. In a twist, Kharma — who has attacked both babyface and heel Divas as of late — turned babyface with her promo inside the ring while the heel Bella Twins came out and insulted her, possibly setting a match between Kharma and the Bellas when she returns.
WWE is already receiving praise from fans on Twitter and Facebook for allowing her the opportunity to announce the pregnancy live on the air instead of going another route until she returned. Back from the break and Kharma is in the ring. Everyone told her it was impossible.
Kharma says she took his words and took the advice to Japan where she scrubbed floors of dojos in exchange for training to become a wrestling master. Kharma says she moved on to every wrestling promotion until finally, her dream became true and she came to WWE this year.
